Kuber, the prince of Lanka then known as the city of gold was banished by his brother Ravan. During his exile, Kuber led a devout life full of penance that won him the favour of the Gods. According to the Mahabharata, it was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya - the golden day of power and purity on earth that lord Kuber was crowned as the lord of wealth to the heavens and made the controller of the North. It is in his honour as the God of wealth that buying gold is considered auspicious and favourable.

During their exile, the Pandavas foraged for sustenance within the forest. Once, when sage Durvasa visited the brothers for alms, Draupadi turned the wise-man away for the lack of a meal. Upon learning of the curse that could befall the Pandavas at the hands of the spurned sage, Lord Krsna came to their rescue and transformed the clan’s empty food pots into an Akshaya Patra - the vessel of unending abundance.
